Introduction

GroceryTap ("we", "our", or "the app") is a mobile application developed by an individual developer based in Missouri, USA. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our app.

Information We Do NOT Collect

GroceryTap does not collect:

  • Personal identification information (name, email, phone number)
  • Location data
  • Advertising identifiers
  • Payment or financial information

Error Monitoring and Analytics

We use third-party tools (such as Sentry) for error monitoring to help us improve app stability. These tools may automatically collect diagnostic information about app crashes or errors, including:

  • Device type and operating system version
  • App version and error stack traces
  • Anonymous device identifiers

This data is used solely to identify and fix bugs. It is not sold or shared with advertisers, and it cannot be used to personally identify you.

Anonymous Usage Analytics

GroceryTap may collect limited, anonymous usage information (such as app opens, feature usage, order actions, and device type (phone or tablet)) to help us understand how the app is used and improve reliability and user experience. Analytics collection is opt-in — you are asked for consent on first launch and can enable or disable it at any time in Settings.

This data does not include personal information, is not used to identify you, and is not shared with third parties.

Data Stored on Your Device

GroceryTap stores the following information locally on your device using secure device storage:

  • Grocery list: Items you add, quantities, and preferences
  • Order history: Records of orders you've confirmed placing
  • App preferences: Your name (if provided) and reminder settings
  • Device identifier: A randomly generated ID used for analytics, rate limiting, and the optional cloud backup feature

This data stays on your device unless you use the optional cloud backup feature or the shared lists feature. See the sections below for details on those features.

Local Data Storage

GroceryTap stores your grocery lists and preferences locally on your device. If you have iCloud backup enabled on your device, this data may be included in your personal iCloud backup as part of Apple's standard backup process.

GroceryTap does not control iCloud backups. You can remove this data at any time by deleting the app or managing your device backups.

Optional Cloud Backup

GroceryTap offers an optional cloud backup feature that allows you to back up and restore your grocery list and order history. If you choose to use this feature:

  • Your grocery list and order history are encrypted and stored on our secure servers
  • Personal information is excluded from backups — only grocery data and app settings are stored
  • Data is associated with your device's randomly generated identifier
  • We do not access, analyze, or share this data
  • You can delete your backup at any time by disabling the backup feature in Settings

This feature is disabled by default and requires your explicit action to enable. You can delete any backed-up cloud data by disabling the backup feature or by contacting us at [email protected].

Shared Lists

GroceryTap offers an optional shared lists feature that lets multiple household members collaborate on the same grocery list. This feature is entirely opt-in. If you create or join a shared list, the following data is sent to and stored on GroceryTap servers:

  • Display name: The name you enter when creating or joining a shared list, visible to other members of that list
  • Push notification token: A device token used to deliver real-time notifications when the list is updated (e.g., items added, member removed)
  • List membership: A record associating your device identifier with the shared list
  • Grocery list items: The items in your shared list, synced with other members

This data is used solely to enable collaboration and deliver notifications. It is not sold or shared with third parties. You can delete this data at any time by leaving or deleting the shared list, or by using the "Delete server data" option in Settings.

Third-Party Services

GroceryTap integrates with third-party services such as Instacart only when you choose to use those features. Any information shared with Instacart is governed by Instacart's own privacy policy and terms of service.

Instacart® Integration

GroceryTap integrates with Instacart® to help you place grocery orders. When you tap "Order with Instacart":

  • Your grocery list items are sent to Instacart® to pre-populate your cart
  • You are redirected to the Instacart® app or website
  • Any subsequent data collection or purchases are governed by Instacart's Privacy Policy

By using the Instacart® handoff feature, you agree that Instacart's privacy policy governs any subsequent data collection on their platform. We do not receive any information back from Instacart® about your orders, payments, or account.

Affiliate Relationship

GroceryTap participates in the Instacart affiliate program. We may earn a commission when you place an order through Instacart® after using our app. This does not affect the prices you pay on Instacart®.

Instacart® is a registered trademark of Maplebear Inc. GroceryTap is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Instacart®.

App Store Platforms

GroceryTap is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. These platforms may automatically collect minimal data about your device and app usage as required by the platform (such as privacy nutrition labels). This data collection is governed by Apple and Google's own privacy practices:

Notifications

If you enable reorder reminders, GroceryTap schedules local notifications on your device. These are processed entirely on your device and no data is sent to any server.

If you use the shared lists feature, GroceryTap also sends push notifications to alert members when the list changes. This requires storing a push notification token on our servers as described in the Shared Lists section above.

Data Security

Your data is stored using your device's built-in secure storage mechanisms. Since most data remains on your device, you maintain full control over it.

Data Deletion and Control

GroceryTap gives you full control over your data:

  • Local data: Deleting the app removes all locally stored data (grocery list, order history, settings) from your device.
  • Cloud backup: Disable cloud backup in Settings and choose to delete your backup, or contact us at [email protected].
  • Server data (shared lists, push tokens, analytics): Using "Clear all data" in Settings > Data permanently deletes all data stored on GroceryTap servers, including shared list memberships, push notification tokens, and anonymous analytics events associated with your device.

If you have questions about data handling, you can contact us at [email protected].

Children's Privacy

GroceryTap is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect any information from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided information to us, please contact us.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your data under laws such as PIPEDA (Canada), GDPR (Europe), or CCPA (California). Where applicable, you may have the right to:

  • Request access to any personal information we maintain about you
  • Request correction or deletion of your data
  • Request a copy of your data in a portable format
  • Lodge a complaint with a data protection authority

Since GroceryTap stores most data locally on your device, you already have direct control over your data. You can export your grocery list from the app's Settings, and uninstalling the app deletes all local data. For cloud backup data or other requests, please contact us at [email protected].

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
